PNG to JPG

Turn a PNG into a JPEG and decide exactly what happens to transparent areas. The chosen background colour is painted underneath the image before encoding.

Drop PNG images here, or choose files. Everything stays on this device.

Options

JPEG has no transparency, so transparent pixels are filled with this colour.

Lower quality means a much smaller file and more visible artefacts. (%)

Waiting for files

Accepted input

  • PNG images, up to 10 at a time

Limits

  • Up to 20 MB per image and 10 images per batch.
  • Up to 40 megapixels per image, checked before the pixels are allocated.
  • JPEG has no transparency, so you choose the colour that replaces it.

Local processing

  • Files are read in your browser and are never uploaded to a server.
  • Nothing is stored after you close or reload the page.

How to use PNG to JPG

  1. Add one or more PNG images.
  2. Pick the background colour that replaces transparency and choose a quality.
  3. Press Convert to JPG and check the reported size and dimensions.

What it does

  • Fills transparency with your colour instead of the usual accidental black or white.
  • Reports the flattened size so you can see the effect of the colour.
  • Reads the encoded file back to confirm it really is a JPEG.

Limits and things to know

  • The colour choice is destructive: the original alpha channel is gone in the result.
  • Semi-transparent edges blend into the background and can look slightly soft.
  • Text and line art survive badly at low quality; use 85 or more for screenshots.

Example

Turning a transparent logo into an email-safe JPEG

Add a logo with a soft alpha edge, set the background to the colour of your page, and convert. The edges blend into that colour instead of picking up a black fringe.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to transparent pixels?

They are filled with the background colour you chose, because JPEG has no way to store transparency.

Why do my edges look dark?

Usually the source PNG has semi-transparent pixels that were blended with a different colour before, for example black. Try a background closer to the real page colour.

Can I keep the transparency?

Not in a JPEG. Convert to PNG or WebP if the alpha channel has to survive.
