Add files

Drop Excel files here, or choose files. Everything stays on this device.

Options

1 is the first sheet. You can also type a sheet name.

Waiting for files

Accepted input

  • XLSX files

Limits

  • Up to 20 MB per CSV/Excel file and up to 100000 rows.
  • CSV, TSV, XLSX and JSON inputs are supported in this category.

Local processing

  • Files are read in your browser and are never uploaded to a server.
  • Nothing is stored after you close or reload the page.

How to use Excel to JSON

  1. Add an XLSX workbook.
  2. Enter the sheet number or name you want to export.
  3. Press Excel to JSON and download the JSON file.

What it does

  • Selects the sheet by number or name rather than assuming the first sheet.
  • Emits one JSON object per data row with the header row as keys.
  • Reports the sheet name and row count in the result summary.

Limits and things to know

  • Only one sheet is exported per run.
  • Macros and charts are ignored; formulas are read as cached values.
  • All values are emitted as strings, because the workbook reader does not guarantee types.

Example

Reading a price list sheet

A workbook has a Prices sheet with sku, description, price columns. Set the sheet field to Prices and convert to get [{ "sku": "A1", "description": "Cable", "price": "9.99" }].

Frequently asked questions

Which sheet is converted by default?

The first sheet, unless you enter a different sheet number or name in the sheet field.

Are numbers emitted as JSON numbers?

They are emitted as strings so leading zeros and long identifiers are not altered. Cast types in your application.

Can I convert an .xls file?

No. Legacy .xls is refused; save it as .xlsx first.
