Image Size Checker
Get the numbers a browser would use: stored pixels, file size in bytes, colour type and what the EXIF orientation tag does to the picture. A broken header is reported as an error, not as zeroes.
Add files
Drop JPEG images, PNG images, WebP images here, or choose files. Everything stays on this device.
Waiting for files
Accepted input
- JPEG, PNG and WebP images, up to 10 at a time
Limits
- Up to 20 MB per image and 10 images per batch.
- Up to 40 megapixels per image, checked before the pixels are allocated.
- Only the file header is read, so a large file costs almost nothing to inspect.
Local processing
- Files are read in your browser and are never uploaded to a server.
- Nothing is stored after you close or reload the page.
How to use Image Size Checker
- Add one or more images.
- Press Check image size.
- Read the stored pixels, the display size and the orientation wording.
What it does
- Shows stored pixels next to the size the image displays at after EXIF rotation.
- Reports the colour type, bit depth and whether the file carries transparency.
- Reads the header only, so inspecting a 20 MB file is instant.
Limits and things to know
- Stored pixels and displayed size differ only when an orientation tag is present.
- CMYK and 16-bit files are described, not converted.
- A truncated file is reported with the reason; the tool does not guess a size.
Example
Working out why a photo appears sideways
Add the photo. The table shows 4000×3000 stored pixels and 3000×4000 displayed, because the file declares a 90° rotation. Uploaders that ignore EXIF will show it sideways.
Frequently asked questions
Why are there two sizes?
One is what the file stores and the other is what it should look like once the EXIF orientation tag is applied. Photos taken in portrait often store landscape pixels plus a rotate tag.
Does this tool modify my file?
No. Only the header is parsed, so nothing is decoded, re-encoded or downloaded.
What happens with a corrupt file?
The tool reports that the header could not be read and names the file, instead of printing zeros that look like a real measurement.
